Capturing the first or the last rays of sun

Tagallalang Rice Terraces, are surrounded by trees on all sides, making the photos taken during the golden hour, both during sunrise and sunset, stand out from the rest. The terraces are open 24 hours, so if you really want to capture those first rays of sun, passing through the canopy of coconut trees, you need to get on your scooter, and get those shots, before the big tourist buses start coming, which is usually around 10 AM.

  • Hi Arnav,

What an amazing article. You truly managed to capture the essence of the rice terrace. I absolutely adore Bali, mainly because I’ve been to Bali four times, and feel like I can never manage to see everything I want to.

Keep up these great articles. Wishing you all the best on your travels.

  • The Ubud rice terraces are the topmost reason why I want to visit Bali. Apart from a stay in a rainforest villa, of course! The vibrant green color is so tempting. Which is the best time of the year to go?

  • There is so much to do in Bali! I’d need a few months just to do and see all the great things I’ve read about. Visiting the rice terraces would definitely be at the top of my list though!

  • I have only been to visit Bali once, but we lucked out and stayed very close to the Tegallang rice terraces. It is a very beautiful place, hopefully not to overrun by tourists everyday.

  • My sister went to Bali last year and absolutely loved it. She said it was so relaxing and peaceful and that the people were super friendly and welcoming. I’d love to visit myself and hit up all those cafes!

  • I would love to see the rice terraces for sunrise! Living in the Philippines where rice planting in terraces is also a practice, it still excites me to visit Bali, particularly Ubud. Anywhere with greeneries, fresh air and some peace and quiet appeals to me. I also like that people can bike to the terraces – aside from a good exercise, it’s more environment-friendly, too.

  • Dying to get to Bali. Had to cancel my trip last year due to the whole volcano issue. Ubud was o the top of my list! I knew about the rice terraces but didn’t know about the swings and the the I love Bali sign so thank you 🙂
Gorgeous insta feed by the way!

  • I see you’re a civil engineer by training. I am a physicist. Have you heard the joke about which engineer designed the human body? Love that one. I also love the Instagramability of the rice terraces. No wonder you have such great engagement with beautiful shots like this. Props too for suggesting that you just bike there. Ride on!

  • I am hoping to make a Bali itinerary soon! The Bali Swings and the I Love Bali signs. They are high on my list as I have seen them before but didn’t know exactly where they were! Your photos are beautiful!

  • The Rice Terraces would be my top reason to visit Bali. I’m yet to go there though.
My friend recently visited Ubud and ever since I saw those pictures, I’m just fascinated by how gorgeous Ubud looks.
Its not often you find places that look good both in sunrise & sunset!!!! Wow!

  • Bali is on top of my bucket list but would never have thought of this place. Tegallalang Rice Terraces, Surely look stunning and very picturesque. Would live to catch the sun rise and set as you suggested and enjoy the natural beauty of this plane. There is so much more to Bali then just beaches and this post surely shared another side of the more popular Bali.

  • These rice terraces in Bali make me tempted to book tickets now. Really the whole view is very photogenic and I must say, I would really drain my camera’s memory here. Great idea to spend some time in the cafe which overlooks these terraces. I even loved the floor seating arrangement in a cafe, just like Indian traditional way of eating. Going by bike from Ubud is a nice tip.

  • The Tegallalang Rice Terraces are spectacular and these reasons to visit them completely sold it! I could visualise sitting in the cafe overlooking the terraces and the greenery took my breath away! Last time I felt like this as when I was landing in Trivandrum in India and all I could see was green cover of trees. This was many years back. Loved this virtual tour.

  • I was at Tegallalang rice terraces last year and your post brought back some great memories. The cafe overlooking the terraces was my favorite part – can’t beat an avocado shake with that view!

The terraces look a whole lot greener than my pic though!

Great post, thanks for sharing :))

  • Definitely an Instagrammer’s heaven! Ahaha, joking apart, these terraces are so beautiful! I’ve yet to visit Bali but I’ll definitely keep this place in mind for my future travels there 🙂

  • The last time I was in Bali, we could not see any of the amazing rice fields. Now your post makes me regret my decision again. Everyone has so many good experiences there, including you. Maybe I should get back there!

  • I went to the rice terraces in Bali almost 30 years ago! They were magnificent then but it has grown into a thing to do now! Can you really walk through the terraces or should you ask for someone’s permission? I do want to go to the swing and some of the Bali signs but I also want to experience something a little different!

    • We just walked along, as theres no permission required per say. However, at a few places, a few locals, had made a kind of a barricade, allowing people only after donating something.

  • Super close Arnav. About 20 minutes….as the motorbike flies LOL. We stayed in a village 3 minutes from the terraces. Funny thing is we did not visit until the last day of the trip hahaha. But we enjoyed it, at 6 AM, foggy setting. So mysterious.

    Ryan
